Planted in 2007, Mary and Steve Robertson founded SJR Vineyard on ten acres. Three more acres were added in 2017. From the onset, the Robertson’s intent has been to create a world-class wine estate; focused on Syrah, Viognier and Grenache.. Operationally, and to that end, this is very much a family affair, with direct and active involvement provided from each family member! Brooke Robertson charts the estate course forward, implementing cutting-edge viticulture practices. Each block and variety is addressed independently; assessing appropriate training form, pruning rigor and nutrient/irrigation strategies.
In 2017, we converted all of the Syrah and Grenache blocks to a new training form that Brooke engineered and executed ; the mini-head trained (MHT) vine, which allows us to protect each plant from severe cold over the winter. This new training form is being adopted by other vineyards within the Rocks District AVA for its many growing season, as well as severe cold, advantages. In 2019, a small block of Cinsault was planted at SJR. In 2020, we released our first varietal Viognier (2018 vintage) from the estate. That block received a training form update in 2020. Also, in 2020, with the vineyard in its 14th leaf, the Grenache block was harvested and vinified by Delmas for the first time; release scheduled for the fall of 2022. Our goal with this new estate wine is to embrace vintage variation with another distinctive expression of SJR Vineyard’s red varieties/clones; a Grenache dominant, Field Blend.
SJR Vineyard is located on the corner of Lower Dry Creek and County Road in Milton-Freewater, at the SW corner of ‘The Rocks District’. Delmas is located in Walla Walla. Visits are welcome... appointment only.
